Time Line of Events in N.I.V.F.C. History
  • February 1921, a fire at the bakery building prompted North Irwin's citizens to form a fire company. That same month a meeting was held at the Eureka Club and the North Irwin Independent Fire Company No. 1 was formed.
  • The first money taken in by the fire company came from a pie social held in the school building on March 31, 1921
  •  In November of 1925, the first fire house was opened just off of Second St. to house the new equipment that included buckets, ladders, and soda & acid tanks each mounted on a two-wheeled chassis.
  • In 1935, the department purchased its first motorized truck, an American LaFrance Scout. The truck had a red body with nickel-plated trim and a 78hp engine, a rotary gear pump capable of discharging 500 gallons of water per minute, "Rough Rider" soda and acid tanks, and a search light.
  •  A week after the new motorized truck was placed in service it proved its worthiness when Asst. Chief Thomas Steel's home was saved after being struck by lightning.
  • In 1936 a Junior Drum Corps., was formed by the fire company which performed on many occasions including the 1939 Memorial Day Parade in Irwin where they appeared in their new blue & white uniforms. However, due to the United States entrance into World War 2 the drum corp., was forced to disband as many of its members went off to serve their country.
  • 1938, the hot topic around the borough was new fire plugs. The first plug was installed at the corner of Broadway Ave. and Second St. by Karl Hellmann and Harry Pringle.
  • In 1938 there was a new place in town to socialize when the fire company open its social club in the same building that housed the fire equipment.
  • On September 8, 1944 the fire company purchased the former bakery building located at Broadway Ave. and Second St. (This is the same building that sparked the concern to form a fire company).
  • 1948 the North Irwin Ladies Auxiliary was formed with 51 charter members.
  • 1950 In a joint effort to remember it deceased members the Auxiliary and the Firefighters designed and placed a plaque at Bushy Run Park that reads,"1921-1950, North Irwin Volunteer Fire Company and Ladies Auxiliary, In Memory of Deceased Members".
  • May 12, 1962 the 25 year mortgage was paid off and a mortgage burning ceremony was held in front of the fire station.
  • After 55 years of service, in 1976 the company purchased its first brand new piece of fire apparatus, a 1977 CF Model Mack to replace the 1948 closed cab LaFrance.
  • 1981 brought big changes to the company, after years of being dispatched by North Huntingdon Twp as Company 10, the new county wide 911 center would begin dispatching North Irwin as Station 12.
  • 1985 brought the second brand new piece of apparatus to replace the old squad/air truck. The new one was a 1985 Chevy Chassis with a Marin Body as the new Air 12.
  • 1989 saw yet another new arrival to the company. A new 1989 Ford E-one was purchased to replace the 1957 LaFrance
  • After 10 years of serving as one of the busiest Air trucks in the county the 1985 Chevy was replaced with a 1995 International Lo-profile chassis. The Marion body from the 1985 Chevy was remounted on the new  International.
  • In 1995, North Irwin V.F.C. also hosted the Westmoreland County Fireman's Convention.
  • In 1998, after 22 years of service but still showing lots of life, the 1977 Mack given a face lift at the cost of $90,000 by Four Guys Fire Trucks.
  • To bring in the new millennium, North Irwin V.F.C. once again hosted the Westmoreland County Fireman's Convention.
  • In 2001, the North Irwin Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary purchased and donated to the company a 1986 Chevrolet Beauville from Westmoreland County Station 9 Level Green.
  • With the company growing bigger and the building growing older, 2002 brought a new addition to the building. A second bay was added to house some of the apparatus and to give more space.

  • 2005 brought a new piece of apparatus that North Irwin has never owned. A 1984 55' Pierce Squrt was purchased from Harrison City Fire Dept to better protect the residents of North Irwin Boro.
  • After 62 years in our current station, in 2005 the building was once again needing a face lift. This time the social club received a complete remodeling with everything new.
  • In 2006 the end of an era came with the selling of the 1989 Ford E-one. After 17 years of service the engine was sold to Westmoreland County Station 76 Kecksburg.
  • In 2007 North Irwin VFC was awarded a Dept. of Homeland Security Grant in the amount of $37,000 for the purchase of new turnout gear and a new thermal imaging camera.
  • 2007 also brought with it the idea of of getting a newer piece of apparatus. The squrt was sold to Boothville-Venice, LA fire dept. And brought in to replace it was a 1996 Ferrera Spartan purchased from Allegheny County Station 292.
